Report of the Medical English Program in Hawaii
ホーム ホーム最新情報医学科学生海外派遣事業及び語学研修(ハワイ)事業の報告について

0133562M Tomohiro Hayashi(5 grade)

I decided to join this program because I have never had an opportunity to speak with foreigners in English and I wanted to make progress in English conversation. I had a hard job getting a visa on my passport this time. I had to complete many documents and spend much time in spite of the hard schedule of BSL and club activities. I am most grateful to Ms.Miwa who helped me prepare the documents. I suggest that anyone who needs to get a visa to go abroad should get them ready as early as possible.

This was the first time to visit Hawaii. Hawaii was so beautiful and warm, but to tell the truth, there are so many Japanese that was the only thing that disappointed me.
I felt keenly the importance of oral presentation in American Medicine through this course. Every day we took the medical history from UH students, then we reported doctors. It was very interesting, though at the same time, I realized that I didn’t
have much vocabulary enough to express what I wanted to say. History taking needs a lot of experience and I think that my medical interview was getting better as I practiced every day.
In the morning, we watched videos concerning medical ethics. The cases were so tough and complicated. Classified into three groups, we had a lively discussion about them in doctor’s or patient’s position. At first, we were so embarrassed. But, gradually we were taking an active part in this program.
In the evening, we had Dr.kobayashi and Dr.Furuta class. They played a roll in patients and we asked them questions in doctor’s position in turn. Dr.Kobayashi presented strange and difficult cases. So we had a lot of troubles in the class. This program made me find the importance of giving differential diagnoses. To pronounce a diagnosis, we have to rule them out logically.

Experiencing this program made the motivation to study medicine and English much stronger. I am going to study English continuously. So if I have a chance to go abroad once more, I want to bring my English into play.

Finally, I greatly appreciate and would like to thank all staffs who gave us such a wonderful opportunity. And I wish this program will continue in the years ahead.
